CHILTON--SPL--The severe drought of the Summer of 1948 and the hard freeze in February 1949 had their sequels in 1885 and 1886, according to D. E. Wooley. He recalls that many cattle were frozen that Winter. They were skinned and the hides were sold for $1 each. He tells of cattle having to be lifted to their feet each morning because of the drought of the Summer before left little sustenance on the prairie.
